What Are the Mating Habits of the Black Rat and the Norway Rat?
Everyone, whether they hate rats or think they would be a good pet, has generally heard about the ability rats have to reproduce to huge populations quickly. A great example of this would be the black rat and the Norway rat, as these rats specifically mate at a very rapid pace, creating an exponential growth of their offspring quickly. Continue reading to learn more about the mating habits of the black rat and the Norway rat.
Black Rat
Also known as the roof rat, the black rat is one of the most common rats that can be found throughout the world. They love to build their shelters in places high above the ground, as they are very strong climbers. These black rats generally have fur ranging in color from black to a brownish-grey. Roof rats have super long tails, big beady eyes, and large rounded ears, making them easily differentiable from their Norway rat cousins.
The mating habits of the black rat are fairly ordinary for rodents. They have polygynous mating, which is where male rats usually mate with a large number of female rats. The black rat's reproductive season goes from March to November each year. Generally, the gestation period of black rats is around three to four weeks, and each litter contains anywhere from 1-16 babies, though the usual number is 7. This generally occurs anywhere from three to five times a year, creating a large number of rats quickly.
Norway Rats
Also referred to as brown rats, sewer rats, and street rats, the Norway rat is incredibly common and prolific throughout much of the world. Norway rats are highly adaptable in a wide range of habitats and environments, and they are known for eating everything. Their fur is generally a grey or brown color. The brown rat does not have as long of a tail, has less beady eyes, and has smaller pointed ears, so it can quickly be identified as different than a black rat. These rats are probably best known for being seen living in all kinds of urban, wild, and sewer settings.
The Norway rat lives in a polygynandrous mating system, which is where large populations of male rats mate with the females. Many males may mate with the same female up to five hundred times in one six-hour period of time. Norway rats generally do not have a mating season, though they tend to breed more during warm months. The gestation period for female brown rats is around 15 days as well. The average amount of reproduction cycles in one year is generally seven per each female. Generally, there are eight rat pups born per litter for one Norway rat female. This is a huge reason why the Norway rat is prolific, as huge populations occur in very short amounts of time.
Norway rat young generally progress and develop with the same timeframe as black rats. After about two weeks, the young rat pups open their eyes. They are generally weaned after 21-28 days and then they are forced to leave their nest. These young Norway rats reach sexual and reproductive maturity at different times depending on whether they are male or female. Males are mature at three months, while females take four months to be completely mature.
